CAIRO (AP) — A Saudi man who was released from Guantanamo after spending six years inside the U.S. prison camp has joined al-Qaeda’s branch in Yemen and is now the terror group’s No. 2 in the country, according to a purported Internet statement from the terror network.
The announcement, made this week on a website commonly used by militants, came as President Barack Obama ordered the detention facility closed within a year. Many of the remaining detainees are from Yemen, which has long posed a vexing terrorism problem for the U.S.
The terror group’s Yemen branch — known as “al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula” — said the man, identified as Said Ali al-Shihri, returned to his home in Saudi Arabia after his release from Guantanamo about a year ago and from there went to Yemen, which is Osama bin Laden’s ancestral home.http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2009-01-23-gitmo-friday_N.htm?csp=34
YOU SURE YOU WANT TO CLOSE DOWN GITMO AND GIVE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS TO TERRORISTS MR. PRESIDENT???
True thishappened in 2007 when Bush was president. And it serves as a PERFECT example of what will happen if Obama shuts Gitmo down and these prisoners are released. LEARN FROM BUSH’S MISTAKES why don’t you! And keep these animals at Gitmo where they belong AWAY from US soil!
yes,but if you love torture, we can make an exceptions for repugs in anti-torture law..lol
Where was all the complaining when this man was initially released in 2007 during the Bush administration? Shouldn’t the blame be placed on Mr. Bush’s shoulders?
Let me get this straight, Bush releases a guy from GITMO and he joins up with al Qaeda in Yemen. Just how does Obama get blamed for that.?
Of course, an argument could be made that providing consitutional protections to terrorist suspects may inhibit those set free from joining or rejoining al Qaeda.
Shutting down GITMO is a good idea not because GITMO is bad, it’s simply not necessary for the gravity of the threat Islamic terrorists pose.
Weird how there are people who are claiming terrorists will go free. After all, a guy like Padilla was handled by the judicial system and… guess what? HE”S IN PRISON!
Obama’s faithful followers would rather have these terrorists living in their community than released sex offenders.
that’s what happens when you capture and torture Innocent people for years..they hate you…their relatives hate you…their countrymen hate you. we have created way more future terrorist than we have eliminated current ones
OK, two things:
1) after holding him and torturing information out of him for years, the Gitmo facility was so incompetent that it still couldn’t find anything out about this guy.
2) No sh*t sherlock!! You torture a guy for years in an illegal detention centre without access to basic rights of the law, and then when you release him he decides to fight against you! You don’t say! Did you expect him to be your best friend? Wake up and smell the coffee!!
‘Gitmo’ is an outrage and only helps the terrorists by giving them a cause. It should never have come into existence.
Yes. The release of this man proves GITMO is a failure.
1. There has been over 700 detainees at GITMO.
2. Over 500 have been released under the Bush Administration
3. The remaining 200+ can not be tried in any court since they were tortured.
4. The non-terrorists that were rounded up by the $500 Afgan. bounty polices are so angered by the fact that the country that is suppose to have the highest standard of civil liberties, have held them in a hole for 7yrs have now turned to terrorism.
Imagine being falsely arrested for a crime, spending seven years in jail with no trial and being tortured. I would think you would be pretty damn pissed.
Yes I do si………… and it is explained very well as to why on this site:

Frankly, I don’t believe Mr. President is sure of anything. I believe he is hellbent to prove to his constituents that he is a fire and brimstone decision maker. Even if he shoots from the hip and doesn’t think his decision through from beginning to end.
I believe Mr. President needs a lesson on how it works. Presidential decisions should never leave loose ends, they should have a beginning, a time for action, and a satisfactory result. In life, we don’t just make decisions and be damned the consequences ! Now, let’s go over that again. This time with the training wheels off !
why did Bush release him?
Another person that conveniently forgot that McCain made the same promise. Would you be so upset if McCain was president?
America is supposed to be the symbol of Freedom. Not the symbol of a prison state. We are supposed to be better in some ways than China.
LOL!
Yeah, so just keep on torturing civilians, who you dont prosecute because you have no proof, so you cant even bring them to trial.
Nut when has the US ever cared about the rule of law? They want to kill and torture anyone.
Its the american way, after all. Your country was built on the bloody genocide of the natives, for no reason other than you guys just love killing innocents.
You misunderstand the nature and origin of constitutional rights if you think that a president can confer them on anyone.
Don’t forget that he was released during the Bush administration — and no one can accuse Bushies of being overly generous or soft when it came to detainees.
No one can know the impact of having been imprisoned for 6 years without charges and of then being released without any admission of wrong-doing or even mistake by those who imprisoned him. It does not excuse his joining al-Qaida, but it sure gives it context.
As for shutting down Gitmo, al-Qaida could not have hoped for such a powerful recruiting tool as Gitmo has turned out to be. Further, there are approximately 250 detainees remaining and a significant number of them have already been determined not to pose a danger to the US, but are being held anyway. Those who are determined to be a danger to the US should be charged and tried.
One last point: the source of the info about the No. 2 guy in Yemen is al-Qaida — are you sure you want to take their claim as gospel? Is it possible it’s simply propaganda?
What would corruption care what it does? This sum up NObama in a mere sentence.
