The United States is about to rapidly expand its program of arming and training Yemens security forces, which have come under sharp criticism for killing innocent people. Human Rights Watch says a grave human rights crisis is unfolding in southern Yemen, where government security forces have responded to protests with brutal repression. Human Rights Watch says Yemens security forces have arbitrarily detained thousands of participants or bystanders, including children. Yemeni authorities have also attacked independent media, suspending publications, blocking websites, arresting journalists, and even shooting up the offices of the largest independent newspaper.
