The Arab League is urging the UN to impose a no-fly zone over Libya to protect people from Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s forces, diplomats have said. The organisation, which represents 22 nations, has also agreed to contact the national council set up by rebels opposed to his regime, it was claimed. The council, based in their eastern stronghold of Benghazi, had urged the league to recognise it as representing the country instead of Col Gaddafi’s government. And they wanted the organisation to back a no-fly zone over Libya to curb attacks on its fighters. The league’s foreign ministers “have agreed to invite the (UN) Security Council to assume its responsibilities and impose an air-exclusion zone to protect the people of Libya,” a diplomat said. The decision was adopted by nine of the 11 foreign ministers attending the meeting in the Egyptian capital Cairo, with Algeria and Syria voting against, the diplomat added. Nato has said any international military action would first need the approval of the Arab League. Meanwhile, Libyan rebels have admitted they have been forced out of the key oil port of Ras Lanuf by Col Gaddafi’s forces. They say the dictator’s fighters now control both the town and the oil refinery there – but have vowed to take them back. Libyan rebels flee government forces in Ras Lanuf Libyan rebels flee government forces in Ras Lanuf The admission was made by General Abdel-Fattah Younis, who was the country’s interior minister before he defected to the rebel …

Six Yemeni and four Afghan detainees were sent over the weekend to their home countries while two Somalis were transferred to regional authorities in Somaliland, an self-governing region within Somalia, the department said.

The transfers are the latest from the controversial prison President Barack Obama has pledged to close next month, but that deadline will likely be missed because of diplomatic and political hurdles.

The transfers to Yemen are likely to revive concerns about moving individuals who were once considered terrorism suspects to a country where U.S. officials believe that al Qaeda elements are active.

Additionally, there have also been concerns about Al Qaeda activities in Somalia. In contrast, the breakaway region of Somaliland has enjoyed relative peace compared to the rest of Somalia since the Horn of Africa nation descended into chaos in 1991.

“These transfers were carried out under individual arrangements between the United States and relevant foreign authorities to ensure the transfers took place under appropriate security measures,” the Justice Department said in a statement.

Could it be that Obama is so arrogant that he actually does not care and didn’t learn anything from the previously released “detainees” that went back to Yemen to lead the Muslim terrorist groups?
