Preview of Peacefrog’s blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Balhaf, Yemen Entry Title: “Gulf of Aden… sounds like Paradise” Entry: “Early wake up as we had to leave the hotel at 5am… we were taken to the airport in a convoy of big cars, and there we found the project Dash8 airplane, a 20 seat carrier. The flight over Yemen, from Sana’ to the Gulf of Aden, was incredible. The sun was just rising, as we passed over moutains, deserts, a plateau veined with deep canyons, a few villages, sand dunes, and eventually the shoreline as we reached Balhaf. We landed on the reserved airstrip, and made our way to the plant. Entering the secure area we went through a checkpoint, where Yemenis have to surrender their weapons. There are 60 million firearms in Yemen, for a population of 20 million. In the morning we had all our safety inductions, including a security presentation where the security advisor, a French ex-officer, showed us the map of terrorist and pirate attacks in Yemen and in the Gulf of Aden. His conclusion was that the risk was medium, and that one day or another there will be an attack on the installation. Great. A full bataillon of 800 soldiers from the Yemeni army is guarding the area, and evacuation scenarios were explained to us. The “threat” was mostly internal for us, as a small incident can quickly degenerate into a demonstration …
