A released Guantanamo Bay terror detainee’s re-emergence as an al-Qaida commander in Yemen highlights the difficulty President Barack Obama faces in his efforts to close the detention facility and decide the fates of U.S. captives.
A U.S. counterterror official confirmed Friday that Said Ali al-Shihri, who was jailed at Guantanamo for six years after his capture in Pakistan, has resurfaced as a leader of a Yemeni branch of al-Qaida.
“By Allah, imprisonment only increased our persistence in our principles for which we went out, did jihad for, and were imprisoned for,” al-Shihri said in a video posted on a militant-leaning Web site Friday. It was the second time this week a reference to al-Shihri has shown up on the Web site. He was mentioned in an online magazine on Jan. 19 with a reference to his prisoner number at Guantanamo, 372.
Al-Shihri was released by the U.S. in 2007 to the Saudi government for rehabilitation. But this week a publication posted on the site said he is now the top deputy in “al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula,” a Yemeni offshoot of the terror group headed by Osama bin Laden. The group has been implicated in several attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Yemen’s capital Sana.
The second announcement from the site came the day after President Barack Obama signed an executive order directing the closure of the prison at the U.S. naval base in Cuba within a year.

rior to the new report, the recidivism rate among those who had been held at Guantánamo and released was 7 percent confirmed or suspected of “returning to the fight”—a total of 37 former prisoners. According to the new figures, that number has increased to 11 percent, or 61 total, with 18 confirmed and 43 suspected of involvement in terrorist activities.

Guantanamo only creates terrorists. That’s what happens when you incarcerate people without due process of law. Anyways, the prisoners will be tried. Those who are terrorists will not be released.
Well Bush has probably already returned to terrorism, so that’s one.
Gitmo causes hatred, which cause terrorists.

No one is RELEASING any terrorists (well, Walker Bush released one who’s now in Al-Qaida office in Yemen). You are badly misinformed.
Thank GOD… Finally – a president that doesn’t mind his civilians being KILLED. Barack is okay in my book. We’ll see how it is to live where people aren’t free and safe!

Let’s see . . who was in office in 2007 and released a terrorist . . was it George W Bush? Lol . . why would Bush release a terrorist unless he never bothered to investigate the guy in the first place . . talk about bumbling incompetence . .look at Bush releasing terrorists without even finding out who they are. Bush is the one all you conservatives swear have kept you so safe . . well how many terrorists did he end up releasing . .do you have a clue . .or did he just randomly release prisoners based on . . . what . . yeah . . he never had anything in place to know who was or wasn’t a terrorist in the first place. At least Obama has a plan . . to bring those who are guilty to justice . . about time.
as an ex Marine,I can tell you right now that the prison in Gitmo was a public relations disaster for the U.S. world wide.even the republicans admit that. what will probably happen is the detainees that are to be charged will more then likely be sent to military prisons like Ft Leavenworth Kansas. that guy that was released and went back to terrorism was typical of the slip shod way the Bush administration handled that situation.
He was released because there were no charges to hold him with.
It is not surprising that someone jailed for 6 years without being charged with a crime would become anti-American.
Unfortunately, you cannot keep someone imprisoned because in the future they will join al Qaeda.

Even if we assume that half of those interred at guantanimo bay are guilty of terrorism and that half of those terrorists eventually get released that’s what 60 people? And if they get released it’s not like they’ll be plonked down in new york or anything. They could always drop them off in the sahara or china or something like that you know.

I say all the detainees will return to terrorism. having been in the military and seen it first hand against our troops more americans are going to suffer because of this.
